Strapped to the wheel of karma, he’s worked for most of his career as a college administrator, and is mostly known for his writing on the Asian martial arts in both fiction and non-fiction. He has a loyal following of readers for his mystery fiction featuring Connor Burke and his mentor, Yamashita Sensei.
Bob: There are any number of good places. It depends largely on what style of martial arts you’re looking for. My experience is with Japanese modern budo forms such as Shotokan karatedo, aikido and kendo. Let me know the kind of thing you’re interested in. Also where in NY you might be living.
John, thanks for getting back so quickly…I am thinking either shotokan karatedo or kendo. I have studied taekwondo in the past, but want to try a Japanese style. We are thinking either upper east or upper west with a slight leaning toward east side. BTW, I’m a big fan of your Connor Burke books. Looking forward to the next one!!!
I can recommend the NY Kendo Club–Kataoka sensei is great https://www.nyckendoclub.com/
For Shotokan, you can’t do better than Mori Sensei at the Japan Karate Association of NY. Hard core Shotokan. http://www.jkany.org/
I love reading your books! I emailed you once many years ago seeking guidance as I applied to graduate school. Your words still resonate with me today. I often think of your work and use it to escape the hellish trials that is grad school. Thank you for all you do.
Gabriel:
Glad to hear that some of what I said years ago was useful. Grad school can be a challenge but remember that eventually it comes to an end and you can get on with life. I’m also glad to hear that you enjoy my books!
Do you have any idea when your book will be published or available for purchase? I thoroughly enjoy the Burke series and look forward to the new addition.
Will do, I’m Irish, an ex Cop,judo player and have even had the opportunity to train with an aikaido Shihan to boot. Glad to see some books where the hero or anti hero feels some pain. 😇
I just picked up “Deshi” on Audible. I loved it! Do you have plans to release your other works in audio format? I am going to add your books to my reading list just the same, but “Deshi” got good reviews, and I would love to see the other books in Audio format.
Craig: I’m glad you enjoyed Deshi on audible. I don’t know of any plans to put the other books in the series in audio form, but I’ll check with the publisher. In the meantime, perhaps you can pick up the rest of the series the old fashioned way!
John, they are already being shipped. I couldn’t get enough of “Deshi” and don;pt want to wait for the Audio books. Still, I thought I would bring it up. Thank you for the quick reply.
Hi Jeff. Glad you like the books. Enzan is available as a Kindle book. Seehttps://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KTSZI4Q/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1
John
I don’t know of any plans for audio but I’ll pass your comment on to my publisher—maybe it will give him some ideas!
Thanks for being a reader. I’m working on the next in the series now.
You guys still training in Hamden?
I am moving to NYC in a few months and looking for a martial arts academy to join. Can you make any recommendations? Thanks.

James:
Thanks for the inquiry.
Keppan is moving along, but slowly. I’m estimating 18 months before publication.
Just finished reading your Burke series. Good luck with the new book.
Thanks! Glad you like the series. Spread the word!

If you’re not feeling pain, you’re probably not much of a hero anyway….

Good to hear. Try reading them from first (Sensei) to last (Enzan) and let me know what you think….
Are there any plans to release Enzan as an ebook? These are my guilty escapism pleasures on my iPad.

Lisa.
You should probably not put your phone number in a public posting🤣

Do you know if your other books will ever go to audio? There’s a group of us that would love to have that happen.
John

That would be great! I am ready to dive into another one of your books!
Thank you!
John
Just dropping by to see how you are doing. Hope all is well. Looking forward to your next book
John, it’s been a while since your last book came out. Are you still writing ?
John, I’ve loved the Connor Burke series, and look forward to Keppan? Does it remain a work in progress?
Des I just signed a contract for the next book and am working on the finkl draft of the manuscript
